Heidelberg University has maintained a tradition of presenting portions of G.F. Handel’s Messiah during the Christmas season. This year, the School of Music & Theatre will combine its 128th performance of Messiah with a festive journey around the world to celebrate the sounds and ceremonies of the season. The annual concert, Joy to the World: A Heidelberg Christmas, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Ritz Theatre.
Due to the impending winter storm, all of the weekend events with the School of Music & Theatre on Heidelberg’s campus have been postponed. The same schedule will be followed on the rescheduled dates. If for any reason you are unable to attend please let us know and we would be happy to arrange a full refund.

With the theme “Life is a Celebration,” the 50-member University-Community Chorus will perform its annual fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov., 4 at First Lutheran Church.
Conductor Dr. Greg Ramsdell has planned a program that underscores the role of the chorus as storytellers. “The chorus will explore the many roles that music plays in our lives, the role of music as a way of communicating life’s many beauties and a celebration of the joys of love,” he explained.
Into the Woods – the first production of the Heidelberg University Community Music School’s new junior school and high school musical theatre program – is coming to the Gundlach Theatre Stage Oct. 13-14.

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"... William Shakespeare certainly had a lot to say about love. He wrote 154 sonnets in all. The School of Music and Theatre will present performances of Shakespeare’s sonnets, soliloquies as well as musical performances inspired by the Bard’s many works. Join us for a late afternoon delight in our collection of sonnet-related treats… Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the evening.
Heidelberg University’s School of Music & Theatre will showcase the talents of its major student vocal and instrumental ensembles as well as theatre performers during its first Extravaganza Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.
The Concert Choir is the premiere mixed choral ensemble of Heidelberg University’s School of Music. Annually, the choir masters an eclectic repertoire of choral literature representing major choral genres, historical eras, and cultural traditions. Highlights of the year include the choir’s collaboration with the University-Community Chorus and Orchestra each December in performances of Handel’s Messiah and other traditional holiday favorites and the annual spring tour. The choir is open by audition to all Heidelberg University students, regardless of major.
Heidelberg University organ instructor Joan Holder McConnell will present a faculty recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 131 E. Perry St. McConnell will be joined by guest soloist Jonathan Waters, assistant professor of music education and director of bands, on the tuba.
Noted for her “sensitive and imaginative” (New York Concert Review) playing, Korean-born pianist Sookkyung Cho has been captivating worldwide audiences with her personal, thoughtful expressionist style. She has appeared in venues such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Chicago Cultural Center, Sarasota Opera House, Baltimore Museum of Art, Beaux concerts de la releve in Quebec, Château de Fontainebleau in France, and Zijingang Theater at Zhejiang University in China, among others, and was recently heard on Chicago’s WFMT.
