John Kratz’s first gift to Heidelberg came back in 1965, two years after his graduation, at a time he and his late wife, Beverly, were newly married and starting to raise a family. It was for $10. His next gift – also $10 – came 13 years later. Since then, though, John has been extremely insightful and generous with his financial support of his alma mater.

In the “’Berg-cozy” environs of Seiberling Gymnasium, 208 undergraduates and 59 graduate students officially became Heidelberg alumni on Sunday. They leave Heidelberg with the highest four-year graduation rate in the past 30 years, according to President Rob Huntington.

Dr. Lisa (Schlater) Ziemnik is the recipient of the 2019 Young Alumni Achievement Award, presented Thursday as part of the Beyond the Berg event to welcome this year’s graduating seniors into the alumni family.
Presented for the first time at Beyond the Berg, the award recognizes a recent graduate between their 5th and 20th class reunions who has demonstrated leadership abilities and achieved distinction in his/her respective field of employment and/or service to humankind.

For years, Heidelberg University alumnus Colonel Chad Breeden, USMC has wanted to get engaged with his alma mater, but his military career and distance precluded his involvement. Back in 2013, he “took the plunge” when he returned to campus for his 25th reunion.

President Rob Huntington has announced that distinguished alumna, the Honorable Judge K.J. Montgomery of the Shaker Heights Municipal Court, will deliver the keynote address at Commencement on May 12.
