There’s something to be said for stepping outside of your comfort zone to travel internationally. The risk-reward of a study abroad excursion for one ‘Berg student was more than an adventure.

When senior Nick Johnson was getting ready to depart for his semester abroad in Costa Rica, he bought a one-way plane ticket. He was about to have a radically different experience than his previous trip to Italy.

In Italy, Nick transformed from a “scared puppy” to someone who had adjusted to the culture so well that he didn’t want to leave.

Human rights advocate and best-selling author John Prendergast followed his heart in his lifelong quest to make a difference for war-ravaged nations in Africa. Turns out he also inspired Heidelberg students as he spoke about his commitment to improve the world.

Students came away encouraged about Prendergast’s message to choose to be “upstanders” instead of bystanders.

"I feel very inspired by what he said. It makes me want to step outside my comfort zone and believe I can affect somebody’s life and make it better," said freshman Allison Schwarzbek.

Deidre McVay, ’14, thought the she and boyfriend Taylor Schulmeister, ’13, were coming back to campus to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Alpha Phi Tau during Homecoming last weekend. The couple, along with alum Dennis LoConti, had taken the lead in organizing the event. Turns out Taylor was keeping a little secret.
