Composition Studio

We believe students are at their best when allowed to be creators and innovators. The Composition Studio provides a wide range of training, including composing concert music, songwriting, arranging/orchestration, and electroacoustic music.

One-on-one lessons, courses in acoustic and electronic composition, weekly studio seminar meetings, and regular masterclasses with guest artists/ensembles comprise the core of study. Each semester composers have the opportunity to collaborate with student and professional performers to premiere works on Composition Studio Recitals along with regular opportunities to have works read, workshopped, and performed by our outstanding ensembles.

Starting in the Fall of 2022, the Composition Studio will begin a partnership with The Ritz Theatre for the Performing Arts, a 1,200-plus seat theater in downtown Tiffin, to have our student composers write incidental music for all of their theatrical productions. In addition to composing works for solo, chamber, large-ensemble, and electronic/electroacoustic music, our Composition students carry out a series of career-building projects focused on the music business, portfolio preparation, listening assignments, and reading assignments to prepare you for multifaceted careers.

No matter how writing factors into your studies while at Heidelberg, the Composition Studio is here to support your artistic endeavors and provide opportunities for your creative studies.
