Reading, University Commons
Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas will visit Heidelberg University on Wednesday, March 13, for a reading of his poetry. The community is invited to the reading, which will be held at 3 p.m. in The University Commons.
Lucas’s visit is the second in the spring semester Jean Warren Gekler Writer’s Series, hosted by the School of Communication, Humanities & the Arts.
Lucas was born and raised in Cleveland. He studied literature and poetry at John Carroll University (2002), the University of Virginia (MFA, 2004) and the University of Michigan (Ph.D., 2014). His first book of poems, Weather (2011), received the Ohioana Book Award for Poetry.
Named by Rita Dove as one of 13 “young poets to watch,” Lucas also has received a Discovery/The Nation Prize and a Cleveland Arts Prize. In 2018, he was appointed the second poet laureate of the state of Ohio. A co-founder of Cleveland Book Week and Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery, Lucas lives in Cleveland where he teaches at Case Western Reserve University.
The Writer’s Series is made possible by The Jean Warren Gekler English Endowment Fund and named in her honor. A 1980 Heidelberg alumna, Gekler is the senior associate director of the MBA Career Management Program in the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. She created the endowment for the English Department to benefit and enrich the educational experience of English majors, all Heidelberg students and the community.
