What's new at Parkhurst? Dining options, takeout app -- and more

Like many other areas of campus, Parkhurst Dining Services has had a lot on its plate this summer and especially as we started the academic year last week. From delivering thousands of meals to campus residences to transitioning to take-out when the quarantine was lifted and ultimately, returning to dine-in meal service, it’s been super busy and the Parkhurst team has gone above and beyond.

Now, as we all settle into a more normal routine, things will look different with some new operational changes as students return to camps activities post quarantine. The Parkhurst team got their collective juices flowing over the summer and will be offering some exciting new dining options in new and expanded locations on campus.

“Even with all the changes around campus and in our world today, we have some exciting new things coming this fall,” said Tony Ippolito, CEC, CCE and Parkhurst GM at Heidelberg.

One of the biggest changes is the addition of expanded take-out options for all dining locations on campus. Part of this is due to new limits on the seating capacity in Hoernemann Refectory as we work to maintain social distancing across campus. As of now, when Hoernemann reaches its capacity of 150, students and guests will enter on a first-come, first-served basis.

If Hoernemann is full and you’re on a tight schedule, Parkhurst is offering these new dining options for the campus community:

  • Rock Creek Café, on the lower level of Campus Center, is reopening September 2 Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Featuring cheese pizza and specialty pizza, and breadsticks, a made-to-order deli and a mini specialty salad bar.
  • Saurwein Power Station will become Hoernemann Express, opening Monday, August 30, a grab-and-go concept. For a meal swipe, you can choose five items, including a beverage, a choice of a sandwich, wrap or salad, 2 sides and a dessert. This express location will be open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Berg Bistro 1850, opening Thursday, September 3, will have new look and some new menu items in addition to the old favorites. Parkhurst has added a Chipotle-type concept, Cinco5 Cantina, which includes made-to-order salads, burritos, tacos and rice bowls. Hours are Monday–Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

Beginning the week of September 7, students will also have the option to order meals online with Parkhurst’s new ordering platform, the new GetFood app. With the app, the team will be introducing four new virtual restaurants to the campus: Hello Bistro, Corner Mercantile, Hot Tomato Pizza Company and Cinco5 Cantina.

The ordering process is simple…download the GETFOOD app and setup your account using your Oasis ID number then select Heidelberg University. Pick your Virtual Restaurant Brand then place your order. You can select or be given a pick-up time. Once your order is complete, then stop in Rock Creek for pick-up.   

In these pandemic times, we’ve all had to make adjustments to help keep the campus and each other safe and healthy. Parkhurst is implementing some operational changes students will notice:

  • Directional arrows on the floor, new traffic flow patterns and stanchions so that the Parkhurst team can successfully accommodate all CDC, Ohio Department of Health and Seneca County Health District recommended protocol.
  • Facial coverings are a university requirement across campus. You will need a facial covering to enter any dining location. If you are dining in, you may remove the facial covering when seated. If you leave your seating area, you must put your facial covering back on.
  • Parkhurst team members have completed COVID-19 safety and sanitation training. In addition to routine cleaning, each table will be completely cleaned, disinfected and sanitized after each sitting. All dining locations will close briefly in between meal service periods for a deep clean.
  • Salt, pepper and napkins have been removed from the tables, replaced with a disposable silverware packet upon entrance to Hoernemann. Additional napkins, silverware and condiments will be placed at the condiment station or you can ask a dining room attendant.
  • Former self-serve stations will now all be served, including the salad bar and condiment section. For now, beverages will remain self-serve with an attendant wiping high-touch points every 15 minutes.

“We are ready and excited to welcome everyone back to campus,” Tony said.
