Biology Major
I chose Heidelberg because it offered me the most opportunities to grow and evolve as a student. I felt confident that Heidelberg would place me in the best position to succeed and fully prepare me for my next steps in life after graduation.
I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry because I am striving to become a Veterinarian. This academic path provided me with the fundamental knowledge and prerequisites necessary for veterinary school.
One of the biggest challenges I encountered at Heidelberg was being medically forced to retire for wrestling. With the support of my teammates, coaches, and family, I was able to overcome this setback and grow both personally and emotionally.
The best opportunity I discovered at Heidelberg was volunteering in the Longaker Animal Laboratory. Through this experience, I contributed to numerous research projects and eventually conducted a project of my own. I also had the opportunity to serve in every role associated with the lab-from volunteer to ultimately becoming the Lonagker Animal Laboratory Coordinator. This unique Heidelberg experience as an undergraduate greatly contributed to my professional and academic development.
Outside of the classroom, I was a member of the Heidelberg Men's Wrestling Team, the Excelsior Men's Society, Tri-Beta, and SCRUBS. I also served in multiple roles within the Longaker Animal Laboratory.
The thing I'm most proud of about My Heidelberg accomplishments is being able to conduct my own personal research project in the Longaker Animal Laboratory. This opportunity allowed me to explore my interests more deeply and discover how they connect to real-world science. It also gave me the chance to share what Heidelberg has to offer and how important science is with my peers.
I cannot only state one faculty member without also recognizing the other who deeply impacted my 'Berg experience. Both Dr. Pam Faber and Coach Tony Patrizi played pivotal roles in my success, both on and off campus. Without their guidance, I wouldn't be the student or man I am today. They consistently held me accountable and set high expectations, pushing me to reach my full potential. I am forever grateful for their support and the impact they had on my journey. They did more for me than what I ever anticipated when I first arrived at Heidelberg University.
My advice to new freshman me would be: take your time, study hard, and enjoy your friends. Time will fly by, and before you know it, it'll be time to graduate. But along the way, you'll make so many memories that will last a lifetime.
My favorite Heidelberg memory was winning the Greek Week Olympics with the Excelsior Men's Society. It was a unique and exciting opportunity to compete against other fraternities and sororities on campus in a fun, uplifting environment. The other EXs and I had a blast working together, and ultimately, we brought home the trophy! It all came down to a game of tug-a-war-a hard fought win that we truly earned.
After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and work toward my goal of becoming a veterinarian.
