One of the benefits of HYPE Days at Heidelberg is the opportunity for students to take a deeper dive into a specific career-related topic in workshop-style sessions following the keynote speaker.
On Tuesday, nine students in Dr. Sarah Lazzari’s criminology and psychology classes had an awesome adventure visiting local law enforcement and related agencies, which may eventually serve as internship sites for the students.
The “internship tour” took the students and their professor to the Seneca County Youth Center; the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, where they also toured the county jail; Crosswaeh, a community-based correctional facility that serves nine counties as a residential chemical dependency treatment center; and the Seneca County Courthouse.
At the courthouse, the students got to sit in on the end of a jury trial, where they listened to closing arguments and Common Pleas Judge Steve Shuff’s instructions to the jurors.
The group also talked with the administrator of PIVOT, a court-backed program that assists individuals with sobriety, as well as the director of juvenile probation.
The big benefit is that many of these agencies host internships for Heidelberg students.
“There are lots of great internships, and the students got an amazing tour to imagine themselves in a number of different locations,” Sarah said.
Students who participated in the tour included: Bridgette Burrus, Sarah D’Egidio, Skylar Tucker, Rayce Speter, Jaxon Howard, Kyle Kurmmen, Madison Sundquist, Mya Ousley and Paige Collins.
