The men of Sigma Tau Nu Fraternity held a 24-hour Rock-A-Thon on Nov.3-4, raising over $650 for Caleb Cares 4 Kids – an organization founded by Heidelberg student Caleb Silvia. The charity provides gifts and financial support to pediatric hospital patients and their families.
But the story behind the Rock-A-Thon goes all the way back to 1985, and it’s a family story.
As the Heidelberg Greek community knows well, a fraternity or sorority becomes much like an extended family. Members become lifetime brothers and sisters who support each other. That is certainly the case with the Sigs and the Rock-A-Thon, both in 2023 and when the tradition began 38 years ago.
In 1985 the Sigs were saddened by the passing of Massillon native and Sig Alumnus David Hodak, class of 1971, who lost his battle with cancer that February. David was only 35 and a minister in Rochester Hills, Michigan. In response, the Sigs organized the first Rock-A-Thon to benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of David. They’ve rocked ever since, supporting causes close to its members and alumni.
This year the Sigs chose Caleb Cares 4 Kids to support a great cause and to support their extended family. Caleb’s parents, Andrew and Erica, are Heidelberg alumni and Andrew also is a Sig alum.
“We really respect what Caleb has done,” said Sigma Tau Nu President Chris Sgalla. “Sigs are called on to serve Heidelberg and the community. What could be better than helping children and helping a Heidelberg family committed to that cause? It was an honor to pitch in.”
To raise awareness and money, the Rock-A-Thon started on the University Commons and moved to seven locations throughout Tiffin over the day. Locations included outside the Clover Club, Paulette’s, the Madison Street Tavern and Bailiwicks. The Sigs also tapped donations online from their Alumni Association. Look for them again next year!
